About the Scene

The Scott Monument
: The prominent structure is a Victorian Gothic monument dedicated to the renowned Scottish author Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832). Completed in 1844, it is the second-largest monument to a writer in the world. It stands in Princes Street Gardens and features an intricate design with a large central statue of Scott and 68 smaller statues of characters from his novels.

Princes Street
: To the left of the monument is Princes Street, a major thoroughfare known for its elegant Georgian and Victorian architecture. The print shows the street with horse-drawn carriages, reflecting the transport of the era.

Historical Context: The print captures the appearance of Edinburgh during a significant period of its development. The monument itself was commissioned shortly after Scott's death in 1832 to honor his literary contributions that celebrated Scotland's history.
