Markings (or Vägmärken in the original Swedish) is the private journal of Dag Hammarskjöld, the Swedish diplomat who served as the second Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1953 until his death in a plane crash in 1961. It was published posthumously in 1964.
The book is not a political diary; there are no meetings, no policy debates, no names. Instead, it's a deeply personal record of his inner spiritual and philosophical life: reflections on solitude, self-doubt, sacrifice, faith, and what it means to serve something greater than yourself. It reads like a mix of poetry, aphorisms, and prayer.
Originally, it wasn't something he wanted published. A note left behind simply asked that it be published "as a sort of white book concerning my negotiations with myself, and with God."
